Playing Hooky

It is Sunday morning and we are being quite rebellious.  We are skipping our 8AM hockey practice, we are skipping church, and we are skipping the pancake breakfast that supports Bloomington Girl's Hockey (since 10 tickets were added to my hockey bill, I will consider the financial donation to be my participation).  Rather than racing out the door this morning, I am having a cup of coffee that I brewed myself and my kids are plopped in front of the TV watching cartoons.

I am rebelling because I have not had a minute of downtime in weeks.  We have no groceries. the house looks like it has been ransacked, and I can't even describe how ridiculous our laundry piles are.  Our family has had back to back weekends of out of town tournaments and multiple things scheduled during the week.  I was gone with the middle child last week for a Squirt tournament in Duluth and Chubby Hubby is currently in Mankato for the Pee Wee tournament.

My weekend flying solo to manage 2 kids schedules went down like this:

Friday
5:00 PM Kid 1 gets picked up while I rush out the door with kid 2.  Both kids on the ice at the same time.  I had to find someone to hang with the Diva and get her suited up as goalie because it was her turn in net while I sped across town to grab my middle child from a Squirt game.
7:00 PM Finish what is left of the Squirt Game then race back to grab the Diva after her practice.  Whoops...forgot to make dinner so we grabbed a burger at
9:30 PM  Very late dinner

Saturday
9:00AM  Out the Door with breakfast in hand
10:30 AM Squirt Scrimmage
This team is celebrating one of their first games they won this year.  The smiles were infectious!
1:00 PM 8U Girls Game

 2:10 PM 8U Player Social
2:30 PM Wolf down lunch at Jimmy Johns
3:00 PM Diva's outdoor practice for team #2 (Perfect day for outdoor ice!)
4:30 PM Pizza party with team #2

6:00 PM A trip to Tria to get x-rays.

Middle child jumped into a pool last week and hurt his foot.  Clearly I am mother of the year waiting a week to get it checked out.  Nothing broken, nothing sprained.  Yay!!! Someone was VERY happy.f
For the record, if you want really speedy service at the clinic, bring your kids in fresh off the ice.  No one wants that smell lingering very long.

7:00 PM Return Home.  Showers and bed for all!

Today (Sunday)
10:00 AM Not giving a damn about skipping stuff this morning and chilling out until we have games this afternoon.  I might not get those groceries or the house back in complete order but I will get some sanity back at least for a couple of hours.

January Goal Recap

I just realized it is the end of the month.  I have also come to realize that January is not a month to do anything but survive in this house. Needless to say, I tanked my goals this month.  I am looking forward to February when the schedule doesn't strangle us.  January is BRUTAL and it is not even worth recapping the goals that weren't met.

Dinner is Served

Last night a miracle happened.  We had all three kids at one ice arena and they were on the ice at the same time!  Hallelujah!!!   We even got to drive to the rink in ONE vehicle.  Some people might call this crazy, we call this quality family time.  It is a rare occasion that we are all together.  As an added bonus,  Chubby Hubby and I were able to have 15 whole minutes to brainstorm a house pre-selling to do list and share that moment over a couple of concession stand coffees.

A couple of other miracles occurred this week at our house, I cooked AND went to he grocery store.  Both are equally my most hated task.  I sucked it up and I spent a few hours prepping some meals for the week.  It was not what I wanted to do with a few spare hours but I am really thankful I did!  I love that I don't have to think when I get home.  I even had enough left over from each meal to pack our lunches (another huge accomplishment!).

I chose 3 easy meals that can be made ahead and warmed up in batches.  Since we eat at weird times because I our schedule, I needed something that was filling but extremely quick.  I think I did a great job and no one was gagging which is a sign that they liked what was in front of them.  Unfortunately I don't have photographic evidence and people that know me will not believe that I cooked without proof.

This Week's Menu:

Monday and Tuesday

Beef Chili

Wednesday and Thursday

Crock Pot Pulled Pork Sandwiches with Garlic Mashed Potatoes

Friday and Saturday

Italian Sausage Soup

I have to develop this meal planning business into a habit because it has reduced my stress tremendously and is saving me a ton of money by not having to buy lunches.  My colleagues have similar goals so our goal is to bring lunch 4 out of the 5 days and then have an out to lunch day.  It can't be bad for the weight loss or the pocket book as well!

It is too bad that I don't have the same ambition to workout.  The gym is impossible to get a treadmill and it is subzero outside-so there is no running going on here (at least that my excuse).  I don't want my big return to running to be on a dreadmill!  I am very excited to get back to it but not ready to be a winter badass.  I didn't run, but  I was able to get out and play hockey this past Sunday and that has got to count for about 3 workouts!  I was so tired and still am!

One habit at a time....

A Look at 2016

I can't start my year off properly until I have stated my intentions for the upcoming year.  I know I probably should have had this posted on New Year's Eve but I think I am doing good posting this in January...after all we are in the thick of hockey season.

The year 2016 has a theme and it is "Go Big or Go Home".  I mentioned I turned 42 and I am in the sweet spot of my midlife crisis. I have already covered some of my goals in a previous post and  I do realize that my goals are a little on the crazy side but I ask that you just smile and nod.  I am determined to reach these goals.

My 2016 Goal List

Running

I have already covered this, but I am going to run Twin Cities Marathon.  I will be going from the couch to running 26.2 miles.  Sounds sane, right?  Truth is, I miss running.  And because I can't just go out an run a mile or two, I have to make it a marathon.

You may be wondering how an old, overweight gal like myself can accomplish such a lofty goal.
I have 274 days (but who is counting) to get myself off my ass and transform myself to be able to cross the finish line of a 26.2 mile race.  I have done it before, I can do it again.

Komen 3-Day Walk

I completed the Komen 3-Day Breast Cancer walk in August of 2015. It damned near killed me.   I ended up in the hospital getting a blood transfusion for severe anemia. What do I do?  I sign up for it again.   I didn't realize how sick I was at the time.  It was such an amazing event that I want a second chance to represent my friends and family that are currently battling breast cancer, those who are now survivors, and to everyone that donated.  This event means a lot to me and it is more than just a pink ribbon.

Hockey

I am just coming back as the season is starting to wind down.  I however,do not plan on slowing down with it at all.  My goal is to get more comfortable on skates, practice stopping rather than taking out 5 people with me, and to perfect my wrist shot (ugh....develop some sort of a wrist shot).  I have never had so much fun that comes with so much exhaustion in my life!  I feel blessed that I have this opportunity to fulfill a dream and play a game I love so much.

Weight Loss and Overall Health

Weight loss and getting my overall health in better shape is another topic I covered a few posts ago so I won't waste my time writing about how I want to shed a few pounds, get fit, and really embrace cooking.  This is on my to do every year and it never gets done.  This year it is medically REQUIRED and our family is in the process of adopting new habits.  Cooking and meal planning is probably the most challenging goal for this year.

Reading and Writing

This year I resolve to read and write a little bit everyday.  This year I bought myself a nifty writing journal with my name on it (do people still actually hand write in journals or am I just that old?).  I have been writing a little bit in it each day and I am finding it a good way to either start or end my day.  I also have a stack of started but not finished books to read.  I have regained about 40 minutes a day during the work week because I now commute by bus.  It is a perfect time to read although it takes a way my bus people watching experience.  I feel like I could write a book on stuff I see on these trips to and from work.  Of course this blog also falls into this category.   I will write as much as I can because I think it keeps me just a little bit shy of crazy and it helps me stay accountable to the goals.

New Home

Did I mention I am going to accomplish all of the above while getting our house ready to sell and searching for a new one?  This is our number one priority and hope to be settled by Spring.  We absolutely need to get into something that can accommodate our family's needs.  I am sure it will be quite the adventure!

Happy New Year! A Look Back at 2015

Happy New Year!  How is it already 2016?  How is hockey season already half over???  I really wish I could make time slow its role a bit.  As I get older, time seems to go faster.

It has been a few weeks since my last post and there has been a lot happening.  I turned 42 (FORTY FREAKING TWO!!).  We all got the stomach flu which made a lot Christmas quieter (and the scale a bit happier).  The kids had quite a bit of hockey and we blew through 4 of our 16 tournaments for the season.  New Year's was also mellow.  But the biggest news is I hit the eight week post surgery milestone and I have made my comeback to the rink (different post to come).

What would the first post of the new year be without a bit of reflection?

2015 was a great year but it definitely threw us a few curveballs.  Our family didn't expect a rare neurological disease be part of the plan nor was it in my plan to have two stays in a hospital including major surgery.  Even with the bad stuff, the year was a success and I am proud that I knocked a few things of my resolution list (yes, I a nerdy on that makes resolutions every year).

My goals for 2015 were:

Start Playing Hockey

Mission Accomplished.  I started with a beginner skating clinic, then took a Women's Beginner School, and now I play on a team.  I have no plans to stop any time soon!  I love it and love the women on my team!!

Get a New Job

Mission Accomplished. I started in March.  I love my job and everyday I am thankful for this opportunity.  I will admit it was scary to leave my old employer where I spent my entire adult life but the change was just want I needed.

Train for a Race and Run

Kind of Accomplished.  While I didn't run a marathon, I did complete a 5K and I participated in the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for Breast Cancer.  I finished both but they almost killed me.  I didn't know it then but I was severely anemic.  I don't recommend doing events when your iron is low.

Start a New Blog

Mostly Accomplished.  The blog is launched but off to a slow start. I have a backlog of writing to do and I need to freshen up this place a bit and make it look nice.

Lose A Lot of Weight

Not Accomplished.  I guess I am down 5lbs from this time last year but I have a long long LONG way to go.

Get the House Market Ready

Just getting started. Things are getting fixed up, cleaned up, and painted.  We hope to have it on the Market by spring!

So my yearly resolutions went pretty well, how did I do for with the goals I set for December?

Fitness Goals:

  • DONE!!  Work up to walking 3 brisk miles.
  • DONE!!   Returned 12/28  Return to skating and play in the December 20th Game (depending on how I feel)
  • NOPE!!  Go to hot yoga at least one time since I keep paying for it.

Clean Eating Goals:

Let's be real, clean eating around this time of year is tough.  I am going to do my best to not gain any more weight over this holiday season.
  • DONE!!  NO GLUTEN!  I am allergic to wheat and I have been eating whatever I want.  My GI tract is not happy.  It seems like a no brainer to give it up when it causes a reaction but I am not that smart.  Cookies taste so good and I am like a moth to a flame.
  • NOPE!!  Who packs lunches around Christmas??  Pack most of of my lunches. Going out every day is expensive and really bad for the waistline!

General Goals:

The last few years have been very hectic and some of my favorite traditions have gone to the wayside.  December is an insane month with activities and lots of hockey.  I want to make sure that I get a chance to enjoy my favorite holiday.
  • NOPE!  But we ate a ton of them!  Christmas cookies with the kids.  Notice I didn't say I would make them?  We most likely will harrass my brother and sister in law to make them for us or take a trip to Costco.
  • MOSTLY DONE!!  I Still have a stack to mail.  Mail Christmas Cards before the end of 2015.  Yeah...they didn't go out last year.

Pretty good if I do say so myself.  Next post will cover what I want out of 2016.

Happy New Year
